Fall!

Greetings to Everyone, and Happy Fall!

This is my favorite time of year, as the weather gets cooler and the students are starting to work together in their groups.

This Friday (October 28th) is our Harvest Fest and our class is collecting cupcakes for the cupcake walk. Please send in a dozen cupcakes (or two) if possible. Join us for a night of fun, games, and treats from 6:00- 8:00 pm.

All students need to be studying their times tables and reading every night. I am checking reading logs once a week. This is a big portion of the reading grade.

Our vocabulary words this week are:

adapt, ambition, amuse, annoy, boundary

We are reading The City of Ember in class. Please check to see that your child has a copy to read. Our next chapter book will be Esperanza Rising.

Book orders are due this Friday!

Have a great week!

Back To School!

Hello Parents and Students!

Welcome back to school and welcome to my 5th grade class. I will blog approximately once a month (sometimes more if something REALLY big is coming)! Thanks to all parents who invested in school supplies. We should be set until Christmas, at least, with all of the pencils, pens, paper, etc...

Open house is THIS WEDNESDAY from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. It is an informal way for you to see our classroom, a bit of your child's work, and for me to put faces to names.

Our class is focusing on multiplication, division, the times tables up through the 12's, Least Common Multiples, states and capitals, and the Preamble. Most students really need to be practicing their times tables at home. The easiest way to practice and learn times tables is by skip counting.

We have five new vocabulary words every Monday with a test on Friday. Our words to date are:

appointment authority genuine
imitate forbid automatic
frigid conquer abrupt
communicate abolish contact
decay ignore endure

The first week of each month will be a cumulative week containing ALL previous words from ALL previous months. Next week students will be tested on all 15 words.

This week we are starting an at-home reading log. Students should be reading 20-45 minutes each day including weekend days.

You are always welcome to send in a note, call the school and leave a message, or drop by after school. I am usually here until 4:00 pm.

Please make sure your child has a planner. We write down homework everyday, including vocabulary words, in planners. Planners are for sale in the front office for $2.

I can always use peppermints and tiny, little stickers (like foil stars) in class. Thank you for all you do! I know being a good parent is a huge job, and I can tell how hard you work:) This is going to be a GREAT year!
